Description
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is one of the most important representatives of European modernism. His colorful compositions, which at first glance seem dreamy, tell, upon closer inspection, haunting stories of home, exile, love and loss.
Marc Chagall's imagery is as multifaceted as it is idiosyncratic. It was significantly influenced by three cultures with which the artist was closely connected: the Eastern European Jewry of his childhood and youth, the art of pre-revolutionary Russia and modern French painting. In his extensive oeuvre , which stretches from the early 20th century to the 1980s, Chagall takes up central human themes such as love and loss, which he inventively varied over the years. Thematically, the artist not only draws on personal experiences, but also deals intensively with dance, theater, music and literature. The most important stages of his 97-year life and his artistic development are presented in the volume by the author Ilka Voermann in a vivid and knowledgeable manner.
