This fifth volume in the Cahiers de l'Institut supérieur d'Architecture de la Communauté française - La Cambre, edited by Carola Hein, looks into the status of Brussels as the capital of Europe. What does it mean to be a capital when Europe is extending and establishing itself beyond the models of national states? How can the European idea be embodied in the buildings and urban investment processes which represent it? If Brussels is gradually establishing itself in European minds and throughout the world as the capital of Europe, all of these questions remain pertinent, as bureaucratic and security models, installations which have minimal concern for urban integration, the desperate architectural impoverishment, along with the weakness and resignation of public authorities in terms of urban planning, give the European presence in Brussels-and Europe also-a quite unattractive image. The contributions in this volume offer essential matter for reflection on the future of Brussels with regard to its urban development which marks the European presence in the city as well as its identity and the condition of its inhabitants.
