Internationally acknowledged as a master of 20th century wood engraving, Frans Masereel (1889-1972) was politically committed in the history of his time. An observer of the modern world, his work draws utopias of a marching humanity. These are men and women, carried along by the force of events, who describe often tragic destinies; techno-scientific progress along with industrial development has brought its inevitable share of injustices and catastrophes. If Frans Masereel's aesthetics remain marked, or even ravaged, by the two world wars and their ideological battles, his themes have lost nothing of their relevance for today. By drawing on the brutality of the cuts and the antagonism of the black and white to entrench the ideas they illustrate, his woodcuts have retained the torment which characterises the expressionist years. They also demonstrate the clarity of a vision which enlightens the cycle of dreams of grandeur and disenchantments of a civilisation which discovered that it was mortal after all. Hitherto unpublished drawings touched up with gouache which were used to produce his book Route des Hommes in 1964 reveal the aptitude of Frans Masereel's graphic mind to describe the crucial moments in the history of the people.
