Aperture 251: Summer 2023

Being & Becoming: Asian in America

ISBN: 9781597115483 (PB - EN)

This summer, Aperture magazine presents "Being & Becoming: Asian in America," guest edited by the curator of photography at the Peabody Essex Museum, Stephanie Hueon Tung. Spanning the nineteenth century to the present day, this issue considers how generations of artists have used the medium of photography to grapple with questions of visibility, belonging, and what it means to be Asian American, featuring new photography by Gina Osterloh, Leonard Suryajaya, and Jarod Lew; interviews with Reagan Louie, An-My Lê, and Pao Houa Her; and essays on the work of Tseng Kwong Chi and Toyo Miyatake. "It is my hope that this issue provides an opportunity to discover generative ways of seeing that are rooted in connection and empathy," writes Tung in her editor's note. "It is through the work of artists that we can change our perceptions of the past and heal generational wounds."
