The Second World War Experience

The Struggle for Victory 1944-45

ISBN: 9781847321879 (HB BOX - E)

"The Second World War Experience" is a four-volume series, published in association with the Imperial War Museum, covering the whole six-year global conflagration. Volume four, "The Struggle for Victory" explores the gripping sequence of events which brought about the end of the Second World War. Starting in the west with the dramatic D-Day landings and following the campaign to liberate Western Europe encompassing the famous battles of Arnhem and the Bulge, to the German surrender at Luneberg Heath. In the east the Soviet advance culminated with a bloody battle fought at the heart of Hitler's Germany, Berlin. In the Far East and Pacific the relentless struggle against the Japanese continued with hard-fought but ultimately victorious campaigns to win back the Philippines and gain a foothold on Japanese soil - the islands of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. However, it took the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to bring about final Japanese surrender. Rare items of memorabilia sourced from around the world combined with an audio CD of veterans' first-hand accounts bring the era and the events to life as never before. Memorabilia includes: Montgomery's hand-written D-Day notes; Eisenhower's draft 'in case of failure' message written before D-Day; and, diary of a sergeant in the Royal Hampshire regiment covering his involvement in the D-Day landings, battle for Normandy and Operation 'Market Garden' - the battle for Arnhem.
