Die Erfindung der Pressefotografie

Aus der Sammlung Ullstein 1894-1945

ISBN: 9783775743242 (PB - G)

When photography found its way into the world of journalism at the turn of the twentieth century, it permanently transformed the landscape of the press. Using the example of the weekly magazine Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, published by the Ullstein Verlag between 1894 and 1945, in collaboration with the photographic collection at the ullstein bild picture agency, the Deutsches Historisches Museum traces the birth of the illustrated magazine as a new medium and its use of photography. The collected, original photographs by prominent photographers such as Georg and Otto Haeckel, Philipp Kester, Martin Munkacsi, Felix H. Man, Erich Salomon, and Rosemarie Clausen, as well as by numerous lesser-known press photographers, cover a broad spectrum: current political affairs, everyday life, culture, sports, and portrait photography. With astute contributions by photographic and media historians, the richly illustrated publication reappraises a chapter of the history of media and photography that is offering an insightful look at the twentieth century.
