Fritz Winter

ISBN: 9783868288568 (HB+ - G)

Fritz Winter (1905 - 1976) is an outstanding protagonist of abstract painting. He studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau under Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Oskar Schlemmer. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, he was unable to exhibit his art, but continued to work covertly. In the postwar era, his series Triebkräfte der Erde (Driving Forces of the Earth) (1944) was praised for its remarkable wealth of abstract forms. At the latest since his widely-acclaimed appearance at the first documenta in Kassel in 1955, Winter has been considered one of the most important German representatives of »abstraction as a universal language.« His more graphic work created in the 1950s in the context of Informel received new, decisive impulses through the emergence of color field painting in the 1960s. During his lifetime, the artist laid the groundwork for the establishment of a foundation under the auspices of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections). This lavish volume presents a selection from the core collection of 151 paintings and works on paper of the highest quality.
