Künstlerische Ausstattung für Engadiner Hotels 1850 - 1914

ISBN: 9788857206745 (HB - G)

The interior decoration of the hotels of the Engadine between the second half of the nineteenth century and 1914, with its rich decorations, painted stucco and important furnishings, was inspired both by local tradition and by contemporary European art. The most obvious references were Italy, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, France and Britain, although occasionally the clear influence of Moroccan and Far-Eastern objects also appear. The artistic arrangement had to accord with the aesthetic requirements of a prosperous and international society that loved to travel and feel itself surrounded by works of art and rooms that were refined in taste and manufacture. The interiors illustrated in this book are the work of numerous decorators who were once famous. Their relationship with their patrons and architects, together with their capacity to interpret the desires of the hotels' guests reveal their desire to creat "works of art", and to be part of a "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total work of art) influenced by the spirits of the times. This book offers an overview of the history of art of the Alps that is at risk of oblivion.
