Charles Harbutt, Departures and Arrivals

ISBN: 9788862082433 (HB - E)

Departures and Arrivals is a new book of favorite photographs from the world-renowned photographer, Charles Harbutt. The pictures show themes and forms the photographer has explored in fifty years of work. As he says in his introduction: "There are pictures of men and boys, women and girls, statues, pensive monkeys, moments that took my breath away, scared me, made me smile. That broke my heart." He adds: "I wanted to take pictures that are authentic experiences of the world as I've seen it, even everyday moments. History belongs to all of us, not just to kings and generals." Harbutt's pictures have been exhibited and collected by the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, the Art Institute in Chicago and the Corcoran in Washington. He has had one person show at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico and the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson. His pictures are also in the collections of the Beaubourg Museum and the Maison Europeene de la Photographie in Paris and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. In 1997, his negatives, master prints & archives were acquired for the collection of the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson. This is his third book: his earlier books were Travelog which won the book of the year award at Arles and Progreso. For the first twenty years of his photographic life he was a member of Magnum Photos, of which he was twice president.
