Gauguin, Bonnard, Denis

Russian taste for French art

ISBN: 9789078653295 (PB - E)

In the autumn of 2013 the Hermitage Amsterdam will turn its attention to a small but exceptionally influential group of young French artists from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They called themselves the Nabis, after the Hebrew word for 'prophet'. Their shining example was Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), and two pioneering members were Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and Maurice Denis (1870-1943). The Impressionistswere mainly interested in capturing the fleeting natural light, whereas the Nabis emphasisedcolour and composition.
