Philip Aguirre. L'invitation au voyage

Works on Paper

ISBN: 9789462303355 (HB - EN-FR-NL-SP)

The multitalented artist Philip Aguirre has decided to donate a selection of prints and drawings from the rich oeuvre that he has built up over the last 40 years. This gift is a valuable addition to the collection of modern prints and drawings for the Plantin Moretus Museum prints cabinet and is an outstanding reason for the museum to organize a new exhibition in close collaboration with the artist. The exhibition will focus on the broad palette of disciplines that Aguirre practices, on the important themes that have been present throughout his career and on the role played by printmaking in his work. Philip Aguirre is an engaged artist, with such themes as the spring and water in the world, immigration and refugees and the story of Africa meandering through his oeuvre. Philip Aguirre sees prints as completed products. Drawings, however, serve a very different purpose within his work. The focus on drawing is the start of a thought process, forming a consistent thread throughout what is for him a vitally important process of creation. In that process, it is not unusual to see historic heritage as a source of inspiration. During the exhibition, Philip Aguirre's social engagement will serve as a guiding principle for visitors.
