Paper Money of Congo describes the history of all notes issued by the Congo Free State (EIC) in 1896, those issued by the Bank of the Belgian Congo (BCB) from 1912 to 1952 and by the Bank of the Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi (BCCBRU) from 1952 until Congo's independence on 1 July 1960. On the basis of unpublished archive documents from Belgium and abroad, all issues are discussed in detail, with the exception of the banknotes issued during the Second World War, since the Bank moved its activities to London and Léopoldville, and documents from that period appear to have been lost.
The valuations in the catalogue are based on auction results and retail prices from the period 2016-2022. The corpus of recorded notes and not the quantity printed for an issue is used as a guideline to assess the relative rarity/market value of date varieties. All prices are in US $.
