Description

14 recent paintings from between 2001 and 2004, all in the same format, by the French artist Xavier Noiret-Thomé, are brought together here in a sequel which gives the book its title. The art historian Danielle Orhan offers an enlightening interpretation of this work, which is as incisive as it is erudite, revisiting the history of painting to offer an original formulation: « Noiret-Thomé's painting teams with life and creates imaginary concretions resulting from geological, animal and plant worlds. It aims to perpetuate an original life but also to spiritualise matter, in that a "flood" of images is constantly sought. In so doing, gesture and langage, products of the imagination, all occur to create depth. But here again, this search for depth is only equal to the transparency of the painting. For the disturbance caused by Xavier Noiret-Thomé's painting arises from its diaphanousness. It tells its own story, the gestures which are made to emerge »

Xavier Noiret-Thomé was born in 1971 in Charleville-Mézières. He currently lives and works in Brussels. He studied at the École Régionale in Rennes and received his Master's degree at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He won the Villa Medici Extra-Mural scholarship in Amsterdam in 1996 and the Belgian Young Artist Prize in 2001, and worked in residence at the Villa Medici in Rome, in 2005-2006. His paintings have been exhibited in numerous international solo and joint exhibitions, (Paris, Brussels, Rome, Munich, Luxembourg, Basel, Friburg, etc.). His work has been the subject of a number of publications (Xavier Noiret-Thomé, La Lettre volée, 2002; Voir en peinture, Le Plateau/La Lettre volée, 2003) with critical texts by Denys Zacharopoulos, Jean Miniac, Jean-Marc Huitorel, Hans Theys, Philippe Braem and others.
