Description
Published to coincide with a new exhibition at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and a unique installation at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, this is the first survey of the most significant collection of Kiefer's work in North America. Spanning more than five decades of work, the Hall Foundation's Kiefer collection holds iconic masterpieces such as the poppy paintings, the pavilion, The Women of the Revolution, and the Fertile Crescent alongside early works and personal ephemera, many of which have never before been reproduced. Rarely seen works, from smaller early canvases to the group of watercolours, anticipate the material presence of his later and structurally larger works, such as the Hall's collection of major installations. Among the earlier treasures are Kiefer's artist's books, which are reproduced here in unprecedented depth and which contain in their rough directness so much of the lyricism with which the artist approaches works of drastically different scale and material complexity. With a range of work spanning Kiefer's career to date and including original writing from the curators Norman Rosenthal, Bonnie Clearwater and Joe Thompson this is a beautiful document of a significant collection, and a definitive celebration of one of the most important artists working anywhere today.
