Keith Arnatt was born in 1930 in Oxford and studied at Oxford School of Art and the Royal Academy, London. Initially interested in figure and portrait painting, he began to perform ''situations'' in 1967 which were recorded in photographs. With his 1969 series ''Self-burial'', he became a widely exhibited - and highly influential - conceptual artist. But in the mid-1970s, Arnatt''s interest switched to the history and tradition of ''straight'' photography.
