Description
In 1950, to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth, the Italian government commissioned Spanish painter Salvador Dalí to produce 100 illustrations for a deluxe edition of The Divine Comedy. Controversy arose over the hiring of a foreigner to illustrate the Italian masterpiece. Although an Italian artist was eventually chosen, Dalí passionately continued to work on the illustrations and, in 1959, supervised publication of a French edition using a high-quality engraving process to stunning effect. Now available in English for the first time, this luxurious volume features Dalí’s extraordinary illustrations alongside the full translation.
