Description
Yellowed, moldy pages are the support material for Martin Neumaier’s multilayered collages, in which he carries out an intense examination of European colonialism and imperialism. Glued-on graphic elements dynamize the printing ink of the lettering and depictions and translate them into constructivist and abstract imagery. At second glance the works acquire an additional component and become superimpositions of different cultures. The books that Neumaier (*1970 in Hürth) uses as the foundation for his works are textbooks and science books from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, which experience a reinterpretation, adaptation, and redefinition in their processing: in their palimpsest, the narrow representations on the pages achieve an aesthetic freedom that also duplicates their dimensions of meaning to ultimately acquire any number of other possible ways of perceiving them visually.
