Nukuoro

The tino aitu figures purchased by Johann Stanislaus Kubary on Nukuoro Atoll from 1873 onwards have been brought together by the Fondation Beyeler in Basle. This publication features almost half of the known sculptures in existence. They are compared here in their original form for the first time, providing a unique opportunity for a reassessment. These rare pieces, which are normally distributed across museums and private collections around the world, have been photographed in great detail, enabling a fresh perspective on a unique artistic tradition. The book concludes with a catalogue raisonné.
