Description
»In common with much of the greatest photography, Leonard’s work celebrates the awesome power of the medium to lift the veil of perception in our everyday lives. These seemingly disparate images, on closer inspection reveal a jewel-like matrix of inter-related moments. This is poetic narrative at its very best.« (David Williams, Edinburgh College of Art).
Beginning with an »education« at the elbow of his friend William Eggleston, this »ballade photographique« traces Leonard’s paths across 20 years from his American birthplace in Memphis to his adopted French home of Arles. His storytelling choices are equally informed by his work on documentary films as a cinematographer and editor. For this collection he offers no formal thesis, only an invitation to open our eyes and take the ride through a startling mélange of candid moments and surreal scenes captured by the camera. Past exhibitions include Museu da Imagem, Braga, and the Photographers Gallery, London. Collections include Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, and Musée de la Photographie à Charleroi.
