Mountains, clouds, and the sea – we have seen such motifs thousands of times on postcards, in photo albums, on the Internet. This is why Karolin Back uses precisely these motifs as source material for her works. Through subsequent scrutinizing, dissecting, and rearranging, she creates images that reveal almost nothing of their original connection to reality. Instead, she offers completely new projection surfaces, which consciously create irritation and throw the viewer back upon himself, so that familiar patterns of perception can be questioned and playfully broken. In the installation, Karolin Back deals with the tension between the fixed moment and the passing of time. The starting point is an image of the Matterhorn, probably the most famous mountain peak in the Alps. It is, however, not about the Matterhorn itself or a documentation of the journey there, but rather about the representation of time. By overlapping photography and video, the artist layers disparate temporal levels over each other – the photograph freezes the moment, thus creating an antithesis to the progression of time in film.
