Description
Tussøy is the name of an island in Northern Norway. Through black and white photos Ingun Alette Mæhlum shows the life of the seven inhabitants living on this remote island. A life closely related to the arctic nature. Timeless, analogue photographs describe the relationship between man, animals, and surroundings. Rough weather can make life hard, but the changes in seasons and weather are at the same time what makes it meaningful. In a place like this, the margins are narrow, and the nature can be dangerous if you do not listen to it and respect it. You have to know all the reefs in the sea and how to read the signs of the weather. You have to be humble. If you think you can conquer nature, it will become your enemy. This humility and local knowledge can take years to learn and sometimes even generations.
Ingun Alette Mæhlum is a documentary photographer based in Tromsø in Northern Norway. As well as working on her own documentary projects, she takes on various assignments for magazines and newspapers. She has received several national prizes for her photographs.
