Auke de Vries

what a beautiful day

  • Kehrer
  • by Edited by Stephan Mann, Ralf Seippel
The sculptures in the public space by Dutch artist Auke de Vries (b. 1937) have become landmarks in cities such as Rotterdam, Barcelona, Wiesbaden, and Ludwigsburg. His autonomous sculptures have been shown in many solo exhibitions in museums over the past forty years, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany. Abstract, filigree constructions of geometric forms, often painted in color, seem to playfully resist gravity and deny the material qualities of the metal of which they are made.

Description
The sculptures in the public space by Dutch artist Auke de Vries (b. 1937) have become landmarks in cities such as Rotterdam, Barcelona, Wiesbaden, and Ludwigsburg. His autonomous sculptures have been shown in many solo exhibitions in museums over the past forty years, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany. Abstract, filigree constructions of geometric forms, often painted in color, seem to playfully resist gravity and deny the material qualities of the metal of which they are made. The publication accompanying the exhibitions in Goch and Cologne, which feature sculptures produced by Auke de Vries for the respective venues, presents the artist as both a sculptor and a draughtsman.
