Description
Photographer, ethnologist, and babalawo Pierre Fátúmbí Verger (1902-1996) studied the traffic and relationships between the cultures of the African Diaspora and those of West Africa. In 1948 Verger made 257 images during an eight-day trip through Suriname. Willem de Rooij's installation Pierre Verger in Suriname, which was produced by Portikus in Frankfurt am Main and premiered there in November 2020, connects the spectator and these images by means of a viewing device.
