Description
The retrospective accompanies the artist Paul Gauguin from his beginnings as a post-impressionist to his pioneering role as one of the fathers of modernism and includes all facets of his work, including painting, graphics and sculpture. During his lifetime, his art questioned tradition and visual habits and aimed to develop a new visual language in which the simplicity of form and the expressiveness of color were the most important protagonists. Today, in the light of post-colonial discourse and debates about abuse, the figure of an artist is being questioned, whose formally aesthetically new and exciting oeuvre continues to inspire. The comprehensive publication takes a fresh look at Gauguin and also shows lesser-known aspects of his work with works from international museums and important private collections.
