Description

Researched from diverse and extensive source materials (including directories, documents in city archives, newspapers, fieldnotes, postcards, etc.), Unseen Siam. Early Photography 1860-1910 reveals the careers of 15 well-known and lesser-known early photographers who worked in Siam, many of whom became court photographers to the then monarch, King Chulalongkorn of Siam. Their work was not restricted to photographic cartes-devisite, as was often the case, but also included large images from attributable albums and portfolios. Each reproduced photograph is fully catalogued and in many cases identifies the name of the photographer behind many well-known images for the first time. Many of the previously unpublished photographs in this first comprehensive English-language overview of early photography in Siam (Thailand) are not on general view. There is also an extensive bibliography.
