Description

Through which devices are ideas communicated? Where do images reside? A selection of eight of Joan Fontcuberta's most significant projects confronts us with these questions. Herbarium, Fauna, Sputnik, Securitas, Pin Zhuang, Miracles & Co, Deconstructing Osama and Trepat stake out between 1984 and 2014 an artistic inquiry rightly known as the problematization of the "regimes of truth" in photography.
Over the course of his career, Fontcuberta has successfully presented the photographic image in various forms. Seeking to reach beyond two-dimensional representation, he has regularly used different objects, devices and installations in his work to support the discourse of every new proposition he has put forward. IMAGO, ERGO SUM brings to light the display mechanisms that have habitually accompanied the development of a creative project in the shape of a book, a visual narrative conceived of as a work of art that enables photography to best deploy its syntactical potential. For the artist, both the distribution in space-be it inside or outside a museum-and the published volume are both equally important, both act as tangential approaches at the service of a single concept.

Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) is an artist, curator, essayist, and lecturer. He is considered one of Europe's most important contemporary photographers and one of the most respected and highly regarded voices in the international scene. He has been recognized with the David Octavius Hill medal, awarded by Germany's Fotografisches Akademie GDL (1988), was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture (1994), and has been the recipient of Spain's National Photography Prize (1998) and National Essay Prize (2011).
