Back in Copenhagen she was in high demand as a portrait painter, and was, as the first woman ever selected to be a part of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' plenary session. Description

Bertha Wegmann (1846-1926) is one of Danish Art’s best kept secrets: She obtained great success abroad through large exhibitions both in and out of Denmark and received special recognition at the Salon in Paris.

Back in Copenhagen she was in high demand as a portrait painter, and was, as the first woman ever selected to be a part of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ plenary session. Despite this, Wegmann has almost disappeared from the collective memory of Danish art. This book seeks to remedy the oblivion and reinstate the artist into the history of Danish art.

Bertha Wegmann is the first research-based book on the artist and is plentifully illustrated with both well-known and recently discovered paintings, photographs and archived material. The book is published in connection with the first grand exhibition on Bertha Wegmann which is scheduled to open in February at The Hirschsprung Collection.
