Description

The exhibition 'Reflections' offers the opportunity to admire eleven video installations documenting the artist's research from the mid-seventies until now by Bill Viola, brought together in the Panza Villa and Collection of the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italian National Trust) in Varese.

These works trace important stages of his career from the 1970s to the first decade of the 2000s. The works for the exhibition have been selected to poetically engage with the architecture of the museum, its spaces - the stables and the first floor of the villa - and the exterior. The exhibition path is conceived as a sort of inner 'voyage' for those on a quest for the Self. The very title of the exhibition illustrates the central themes that will accompany visitors and introduce them to Bill Viola's research. For on the one hand we find the semantic value of "reflection" , which transcendentally embodies the transmutation of the individual in space, the mirror serving to reflect the Ego (as in the myth of Narcissus); on the other, we find the theme of "reflection" as the desire to know, recognize and scrutinize oneself at a deep level.
The book includes texts by Anna Bernardini, Maria Rosa Sossai, Salvatore Settis, an interview to Bill Viola and biographical notes.
