Martine Franck

In her case a form of generosity, being curious about others was very much a character trait of Martine Franck''s (Anverra, 1938 - Paris, 2012), Belgian photographer and documentary filmmaker. From the early 1960s until the end of her life over a decade ago, she patiently developed a demanding photographic oeuvre on the foundation of a sincere attraction to human beings. Childhood joy, portraits of workers, feminist struggles, Buddhist spirituality, the elderly... In the tradition of French humanist photography, Franck dedicated herself to documenting the vast tapestry of earthly human adventure. This volume shed light on Martine Franck''s immense contribution to photography, celebrating this female photographer''s most renowned images of childhood, old age and the theatre, many of which have become iconic. Equally of interest is discovering swathes of her work depicting labour, the women''s liberation movement and consumer society, which have seldom been displayed before now.
