Poetical Ikebana

De combinatie van Ikebana en haiku resulteert in een meer dan geslaagd huwelijk. De overeenkomst tussen de twee kunsten gaat dan ook veel verder dan hun gemeenschappelijke Japanse ontstaansgrond. De verleidelijke eenvoud van de haiku, haar spaarzaam woordgebruik en
subtiliteit, haar stiltes en haar diepe gronden, haar ritmes en seizoenen... het zijn maar enkele van de kenmerken die haiku met Ikebana deelt. Zowel ikebana als haiku raken een gevoelige snaar. Ze hebben de kracht om emoties te evoceren met materiaal waarvan het overbodige zorgvuldig werd weggesnoeid om de essentie te reveleren. Beide kunsten slagen erin om onze blik even vast te houden, ons dagelijks ritme tijdelijk te vertragen en nodigen ons uit om meer te zien dan wat de zichtbare wereld te bieden heeft. Onder leiding van Hedwig Aerts selecteerden leden van het poëziecentrum Gent hun persoonlijke favorieten uit de rijke collectie historische haiku. Naast dit werk van de grootmeesters, creëerden ze speciaal voor deze uitgave ook nieuw poëtisch werk. Het kruim van de internationale ikebanawereld interpreteerde de haiku wat resulteert in een verrassende en gevarieerde collectie die zowel door bloemsierkunstenaars als liefhebbers van de poëzie zal gesmaakt worden.

The combination of Ikebana and haiku is a more than successful one. The similarities between the arts go far beyond their Japanese origins. The seductive simplicity of haiku, its subtleties and sparse use of words, its silences and depth of meaning, its rhythms and seasons... these are only some of the characteristics that haiku shares with Ikebana.
Both Ikebana and haiku have the power to move people. They evoke emotions using material that has carefully been trimmed of the superfluous. Their minimalism is convincing and reveals the essence. They manage to hold our gaze and temporarily slow down our daily rhythm. Both Ikebana and haiku invite us to see more than what the visible world has to offer.
Members of the centre for poetry in Ghent made a selection of their favourite traditional haiku by master poets such as Basho, Issa and Shiki. On the occasion of this book, they also created some new personal haiku. Poetical Ikebana is the floral translation of these haiku, a collection of evocative floral design that stirs the senses and touches the heart.
