Mieke Teirlinck

Mieke Teirlinck (Brugge, 1959) is een bijzonder gedreven en bedreven kunstenares. Met haar geheel eigen penseeltoets schilderde Mieke Teirlinck in 15 jaar tijd een steeds meer beklijvend figuratief oeuvre bijeen dat vooral broosheid en weerloosheid vorm geeft. Vaak gaat het om datgene wat de maatschappij liever verborgen houdt, waar men bij voorkeur het hoofd van afwendt. Haar onderwerpen worden compleet geisoleerd en zonder franjes weergegeven, geheel zonder decorum. Heel vaak draait het om pijn en eenzaamheid. Om bizarre schoonheid eigenlijk waar we blind voor geworden zijn. Maar onder de toetsen van olieverf vinden we ook met regelmaat humor en zelfspot. Schijnbaar moeiteloos smeedt ze uitersten tot een symbiose. En hoewel ze alle franje overboord gooit en altijd alleen maar de kern voor ogen houdt, kijk je steeds naar ogenschijnlijk sfeervolle, oogstrelende taferelen. Je ziet schoonheid, maar wie wat langer en met een meer indringende blik kijkt - de schone schijn voorbij - ervaart ook de pijn die ze met verf vorm heeft gegeven. Het is deze combinatie die haar werk zo uniek maakt.

Her paintings often depict fragility and helplessness. She touches subjects that are rather kept hidden from the eye or society has developed a blind spot for. Her subjects appear completely isolated and are presented without frills or decorum. And yet in this bizarre beauty, there's a sense of humor and self-mockery. Very gracefully Mieke Teirlinck forges extremes into a symbiosis.
And even though she strips her subjects back to their bare bones (often literally), you always look at ostensibly idyllic and eye-catching scenes. You experience 'beauty'. At second glance, however, when the shiny veneer is peeled away, a second darker layer of threat, angst or pain can be experienced. It is this subtle and seemingly effortless marriage of opposites that makes her work so unique and alluring.
