Les Lunda. République démocratique du Congo

De Lunda zijn waardige mensen. Krachtig, dapper, trots en trouw aan de tradities van hun voorouders. De Lunda was een van de meest gerespecteerde en succesvolle beschavingen in midden Afrika van de 18de tot het midden van de 19de eeuw, maar ook in de 21ste eeuw blijven hun cultuur en tradities vitaal en relevant. In Musumba, de keizerlijke hoofdstad van de Lunda, gelegen in het zuiden van de Democratische Republiek Congo, worden de eeuwenoude riten van de voorouders nog steeds beoefend door de bevolking. De traditionele koningsdynastie heeft er zelfs vandaag nog gezag en de kroningsceremonie is dan ook één van de hoekstenen van de Lundabeschaving. De Italiaanse fotograaf Angelo Turconi, gepassioneerd door de regio en haar bewoners, wilde de vitaliteit van deze Bantu mensen, die een sterke gehechtheid aan hun cultuur en sociale structuur, weten te handhaven ondanks de onnatuurlijke grenzen en divisies van hun koninkrijk sinds de kolonisatieperiode, vastleggen. Samen met fotograaf John Anthony en antropologe Manuela Palmeirim, auteur van een lijvige en gedocumenteerde studie over de Lunda en hun bijzondere cultuur, was hij bevoorrechte getuige bij één van de meest indrukwekkende ceremonieën van de Lunda: de rite van de koningskroning. Net zoals in zijn eerder verschenen ''Sur les pistes de Congo'' neemt hij ons mee op een reis naar een deel van Afrika dat erin slaagt van veel van zijn tradities te behouden, maar toch ook stevig geworteld is in het heden.

À Musumba, capitale impériale, au sud de la République démocratique du Congo, les rites sont toujours suivis avec ferveur par la population et les rois qui se succèdent disposent toujours d''une autorité coutumière reconnue. Grand connaisseur de la région, le photographe italien Angelo Turconi a voulu montrer la vitalité de ce peuple bantou, qui garde un attachement fort à sa culture ancestrale malgré les découpages frontaliers survenus au moment de la colonisation. Avec le photographe John Anthony et l''anthropologue Manuela Palmeirim, qui signe une étude documentée sur la culture Lunda, il nous fait voyager dans une Afrique fidèle à ses traditions et solidement ancrée dans le présent.

They are dignified people, powerful and faithful to their traditions. The Lunda civilisation was one of the largest in Africa in the 18th and mid 19th century and it remains vibrant in the 21st century. In Musumba, their imperial capital located in the South of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the rites continue to be practiced with fervour by the population, and the dynasty of kings still holds renowned traditional authority even today. The Italian photographer Angelo Turconi, who is well acquainted with the region, wanted to show the vitality of these Bantu people, who maintain a strong attachment to their culture and social structure despite the border divisions which occurred during the colonisation period. Together with John Anthony, also photographer, and anthropologist Manuela Palmeirim, who has authored a documented study on the Lunda culture, he takes us on a journey to a part of Africa which preserves many of its traditions and yet is firmly rooted in the present.
