Description

Art on traffic roundabouts - in other words, more or less monumental sculpture - has for some decades counted among the most noticeable art forms in public spaces. Since the early 1990s, the number of roundabouts in Flanders has increased exponentially: for reasons of traffic safety and greater mobility, traffic roundabouts are gaining increasing preference over traditional junctions with traffic lights.

In 2005, the Vlaamse Bouwmeester art team commisiones eight visual artists from Belgium and abroad to elaborate an artistic proposal for a traffic roundabout. The eight proposals are made by: Francis Alÿs, John Bock, Lili Dujourie, Jimmie Durham, Jef Geys, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Manfred Pernice and Ettore Spalletti.
