Calatrava

De Spanjaard Santiago Calatrava is een van de grootste architecten van onze tijd. Zijn gebouwen, denk maar aan het HST-station in Lyon, het Milwaukee Art Museum in de VS of het Opera House in Valencia, onderscheiden zich door hun spectaculaire, organische vormen en structuren. In zijn architectuur onderzoekt Calatrava de vormen van de natuur en zoekt hij de grenzen op van de techniek. Ook in België behoort het recent opgeleverde station Luik-Guillemins tot een van de markantste verwezenlijkingen op het vlak van hedendaagse architectuur. Calatrava's gebouwen zijn echter niet zonder meer spectaculaire blikvangers. Zijn creatieve proces is gebaseerd op de antieke principes van Vitruvius. Calatrava slaagt erin de aloude drie-eenheid van utilitas (functionaliteit), firmitas (degelijkheid) en venustas (schoonheid) te vertalen naar de eisen van onze tijd.

Calatrava is behalve architect ook kunstenaar. Naast tekeningen en schetsen maakt hij beeldhouwwerken, meubelen en glaswerk. De kunstwerken zijn voor Calatrava het laboratorium voor zijn architectuurontwerpen. Hij begint al tekenend, maakt sculpturen, werkt structuren verder uit en komt zo tot de uitgewerkte plannen van zijn gebouwen. Zijn oeuvre als architect en kunstenaar vormt dan ook een organisch geheel. Deze publicatie belicht voor het eerst de verschillende facetten van Calatrava_s oeuvre. Zijn beeldende werk krijgt eindelijk de aandacht die het verdient en de verschillende tussenstadia brengen inzicht in de totstandkoming en de evolutie van zijn opmerkelijke architectuur.

L'Espagnol Santiago Calatrava est un des plus grands architectes de notre temps. Ses bâtiments - que l'on songe à la gare TGV de Lyon, au Milwaukee Art Museum aux Etats-Unis ou à l'Opera House de Valence - se distinguent par leurs formes et structures organiques spectaculaires. Dans son architecture, Calatrava étudie les
formes de la nature tout en sondant les limites de la technique. En Belgique aussi, la gare de Liège-Guillemins récemment achevée compte parmi les réalisations les plus marquantes en matière d'architecture contemporaine. Mais les constructions de Calatrava ne sont pas que spectaculaires. Son processus créatif s'appuie sur les
principes déjà appliqués par Vitruve dans l'antiquité. Calatrava réussit à adapter l'ancienne trinité de l'utilitas (fonctionnalité), la firmitas (solidité) et la venustas
(beauté) aux exigences de notre temps.
Non content d'être architecte, Calatrava est aussi artiste. Outre des dessins et des croquis, il réalise des sculptures, du mobilier et de la verrerie. Les oeuvres d'art sont pour Calatrava le laboratoire de ses projets architecturaux. Il commence en dessinant, fait des sculptures, développe des structures et débouche ainsi sur l'élaboration des plans de ses bâtiments. Son oeuvre d'architecte et d'artiste forme donc un tout organique. Le présent ouvrage éclaire pour la première fois les différentes facettes de l'oeuvre de Calatrava. Son oeuvre de plasticien reçoit enfinl'attention qu'elle mérite et les stades intermédiaires de son travail permettent de mieux appréhender la genèse et l'évolution de son architecture remarquable.

Santiago Calatrava is one of our greatest living architects. His constructions, ranging from the TGV railway station in Lyons to the Milwaukee Art Museum to the Opera in Valencia, stand out due to their forms and their spectacular organic structures. In his work, Calatrava draws inspiration from nature, but also explores cutting-edge technologies. In Belgium, the recently completed Liège-Guillemins train station is one the most striking achievements in contemporary architecture. And yet, Calatrava's go far beyond the merely sensational. His creative process is grounded in the very principles that Vitruvius applied in Antiquity. Calatrava has succeeded in adapting the ancient triad of utilitas (functionality), firmitas (solidity) and venustas (beauty) to the requirements of the present age.
Not content with being only an architect, Calatrava is also an artist. Over and beyond his sketches and drawings, he sculpts and makes furniture and glassworks works of art that serve as laboratories for his architectural projects. He begins with drawing, then moves to creating sculptures and developing structures, and ends up by working on the plans for his buildings. His work as an architect and as an artist thus form an organic whole. His artistic output is finally receiving the attention it so richly deserves, and these intermediate stages of his work give us a better understanding of the origin and development of his remarkable architecture.
