Honoré d'O

Naar aanleiding van de 450e verjaardag van Bruegels dood besloot Honoré d'O voor de tentoonstelling 'Feast of Fools. Bruegel Rediscovered' in het Kasteel van Gaasbeek op het nachtkastje van Markiezin Visconti een boek met verbanden te leggen. Daarvoor ging Honoré d'O op reis: niet alleen om naar het Kasteel aan de Rand van een Meer van Ambrogio Lorenzetti in Siena, of naar de grote overzichtstentoonstelling van Pieter Bruegel in Wenen en die van Adriaen Brouwer in Oudenaarde te gaan kijken, maar ook om te reizen in zijn werk en archief, en om aan de hand van drie grote kunstenaars uit de geschiedenis een tentoonstelling in een boek te maken.
Wat deze kunstenaars bindt, is hun nadrukkelijke aandacht voor de reële mens waarin we onszelf herkennen.
Het boek bevat alleen beelden. Het is een reisverhaal, het is een studieboek.
De beelden zijn gekozen en geordend om ze in de eerste plaats één voor één te lezen en ze geleidelijk in groeiende verbanden te zien. De puur visuele taal leeft van onacademische methodes, het onderzoek zoekt vergelijkingen, werpt suggesties, vindt associaties, gebruikt subjectiviteiten, splitst in interpretaties, omarmt symboliek,… en legt, bijna parallel met de academische studie, in zijn helderheid het 'mythologisch' denken van het kunstwerk (de kunstenaar) bloot. God is een kind draagt het masker van de metafoor.

On the occasion of the commemoration of the 450th anniversary of Bruegel's death Honoré d'O decided for the exhibition 'Feast of Fools. Bruegel rediscovered' in the Castle of Gaasbeek to put a book with links on the Marquise Visconti's bedside table. To accomplish that Honoré d'O went on a journey: not just to have a look at Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Castle on the Lake in Siena, or to visit Pieter Bruegel's large retrospective in Vienna and Adriaen Brouwer's exhibition in Oudenaarde, but also to travel in his work and archive, and to make an exhibition in a book based on three great artists from history.
What links these three artists, is their emphatic attention to the real human being in which we recognize ourselves.
The book only comprises images. It's a travelogue, a textbook.
The images have been chosen and ordered in first instance to read them aloud one by one and to see them in the context of links developing. The purely visual language feeds on unacademic methods, the research seeks comparisons, proposes suggestions, discovers associations, uses subjectivities, fragments in interpretations, embraces symbolism,... and almost parallel with the academic study, reveals in its clarity the 'mythological' thinking of the work of art (the artist). God is a Child wears the mask of the metaphor. The metaphor for endless research is knowable only as work of art.
