The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken

A selection of the loveliest trees and plants

  • BAI
  • by Text: Irene Smets. Photography: Karin Borghouts
Leaving the Orangery aside, the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken were built between 1874 and 1905 at the behest of King Leopold II. Not only was he a great enthusiast of plants from Mediterranean and exotic climes, but he was also able, in the fullness of time, to establish an impressive botanical collection. Today, that collection remains unique owing to its size, its diversity and its beauty, and - not least - owing to the rarity of some of its trees and plants.
