Viva Roma!

Deze nieuwe tentoonstelling (ism het Louvre) toont ons Rome door de ogen van Europese kunstschilders. De tentoonstelling neemt ons mee in de voetsporen van zij die de 'Grand Tour' maakten, de voorlopers van de huidige toeristen die reisden om hun opvoeding te voltooien, of van kunstenaars, kunstliefhebbers of kunstverzamelaars.
De bezoekers worden meegenomen naar Rome om er kennis te maken met de aantrekkingskracht die deze mythische stad uitoefende op Europese kunstenaars. De 170 werken zijn afkomstig van het Louvre en meer dan 40 buitenlandse instellingen, waaronder het Getty Museum van Los Angeles, het Museum voor Schone Kunsten van San Francisco, het Thorvaldsen-museum van Kopenhagen, …
De 'reis naar Rome' heeft zich van de 17e tot de 20e eeuw opgeworpen als een onuitputtelijke inspiratiebron waarin de relatie met kunstwerken uit de oudheid overheerst. De vroegere hoofdstad van het Romeinse Rijk oefende een sterke aantrekkingskracht uit door monumenten zoals het Colosseum, de nabijgelegen sites (Pompei, Herculaneum) en kunst met het droombeeld van de ideale schoonheid naar het Griekse voorbeeld.
De tentoonstelling brengt de bijzonderheden van een stad vol contrasten en genoegens, badend in een zuiders licht. De verschillende wijken, de paleizen, de kunstateliers, het drukke leven van de inwoners en zelfs de gastronomie hebben de kunst in Europa nieuwe kleuren ingeblazen.

The exhibition addresses all the singularity of a city of contrasts and pleasures, to the light of the South: its different neighbourhoods, its palaces, galleries, restless life of the population, and even gastronomy which stroke new colours to Art in Europe.
