In 2019 vertrokken kunstenaars Maxime Berthou en Mark Požlep op een maandenlange overtocht van de Mississippi, van noord naar zuid. Bedoeling: de Verenigde Staten doorkruisen op hun meest indrukwekkende levensader, boordevol en omringd door geschiedenis. Maar ook door wantoestanden: van racisme, werkloosheid en armoede over vervuiling tot monocultuur van gewassen. Op hun tocht verzamelen ze, naast verhalen die ze bijhouden op camera, in schetsen en in hun logboek, allerlei variëteiten graan om later het in de drooglegging zeer populair 'moonshine' van te maken.
Dit boek vertelt hun verhaal voor het eerst volledig, in woord en beeld, aan de hand van getuigenissen, fotografie, tekeningen en essays van o.m. de Franse filmcriticus Antoine de Baecque.
Het project was eerder o.m. te zien in installatievorm op de HISK Open Studios en in de vorm van een educatief programma in Centre Pompidou in 2019. Er is een gelijknamige film van gemaakt die in januari 2022 in première ging in NOLA, New Orleans, en onlangs ook een theatervoorstelling, die in mei 2022 in première ging in Ljubljana en daarna te zien was in Utrecht.
In hun maatschappelijk geëngageerde en crossdisciplinaire, performancegerichte praktijk zoekt het kunstenaarsduo naar onderliggende kwesties onder de glinsterende oppervlakte - vaak van water: in 2015 werkten ze al eens samen aan Hogshead 733, waarbij ze een oud scheepswrak herstelden, er niet zonder enige moeite het Kanaal mee overstaken tot in Schotland waar ze de planken van het schip omvormden tot houten vaten om whisky in te distilleren.

En 2019, les artistes Maxime Berthou et Mark Požlep entreprennent un voyage de plusieurs mois sur le Mississippi, du nord au sud. Leur intention est de traverser les États-Unis en suivant leur voie navigable la plus importante, débordante de vie et marquée par l'histoire, mais aussi par le abus: du racisme, du chômage et de la pauvreté à la monoculture en passant par la pollution. Au fil du fleuve, ils tournent des images de leurs rencontres, également documentées par des croquis et des notes dans leur journal de bord, mais collectent aussi de nombreuses variétés de céréales, dans le but de fabriquer ultérieurement le fameux alcool 'moonshine', très populaire pendant la prohibition.
Une histoire que cet ouvrage raconte pour la première fois dans son intégralité, en mots et en images, à l'aide de témoignages, de photographies et de dessins, ainsi que d'essais signés notamment par le critique de cinéma français Antoine de Baecque.
Le projet a déjà été présenté sous forme d'installation aux HISK Open Studios et, par le biais d'un programme éducatif, au Centre Pompidou en 2019. Il a fait l'objet d'un film homonyme, dont la première a eu lieu à NOLA - acronyme de 'New Orleans, Louisiana' - en janvier 2022, et récemment d'un événement théâtral, représenté pour la première fois à Ljubljana en mai 2022, puis à Utrecht. Dans leur pratique socialement engagée et transdisciplinaire, basée sur la performance, les deux artistes traquent les problèmes dissimulés sous la surface scintillante - souvent de l'eau: en 2015, ils ont déjà travaillé ensemble à Hogshead 733, restaurant une vieille épave et traversant la Manche avec elle, non sans difficulté, jusqu'à atteindre l'Écosse, où ils ont transformé les planches du bateau en fûts de bois pour y distiller du whisky.

In 2019, artists Maxime Berthou and Mark Požlep undertake a journey of several months on the Mississippi, from north to south. Their intention is to cross the United States along its most important waterway, brimming with life and marked by history, but also by abuse: from racism, unemployment and poverty to monoculture through the pollution. Along the river, they shoot images of their encounters, also documented by sketches and notes in their logbook, but also collect many varieties of cereals, with the aim of later making the famous 'moonshine' alcohol, very popular during prohibition.
A story that this book tells for the first time in its entirety, in words and images, with the help of testimonies, photographs and drawings, as well as essays signed in particular by the French film critic Antoine de Baecque.
The project has already been presented as an installation at HISK Open Studios and, through an educational program, at the Center Pompidou in 2019. It was the subject of a homonymous film, the premiere of which took place in NOLA – acronym for 'New Orleans, Louisiana' – in January 2022, and recently a theatrical event, first performed in Ljubljana in May 2022, then in Utrecht. In their socially engaged and cross-disciplinary, performance-based practice, the two artists track down issues lurking beneath the shimmering surface - often water: in 2015 they once worked together at Hogshead 733, restoring an old wreck and traversing the Channel with it, not without difficulty, until reaching Scotland, where they transformed the planks of the boat into wooden barrels to distill whiskey there.
