Theo van Doesburg

Een wervelende tentoonstellingscatalogus: Theo van Doesburg als rondtrekkende propagandist, rusteloos op zoek naar een wereldhervormende esthetiek die niet los te denken is van de vernieuwende wetenschappelijke inzichten en technologieën van zijn tijd. Het boek opent met een schets van de kunst en de ideeën van het in 1917 in Leiden opgerichte tijdschrift De Stijl en de gelijknamige kunststroming. Daarna is het de beurt aan de vele facetten van Van Doesburgs oeuvre: neoplasticisme, dadaïsme (onder het pseudoniem I. K. Bonset), elementarisme (als breuk met Mondriaan, 1924-1926) en concrete kunst ('Art concret' was de naam van het in 1930 in Parijs opgerichte collectief dat zich bezighield met geometrisch-abstracte kunst). Er wordt ook ingezoomd op de samenwerking tussen Van Doesburg en andere grote avant-gardisten: er is werk van de eerste leden van De Stijl - Piet Mondriaan, Bart van der Leck, Vilmos Huszár, Jacobus Johannes Oud, Gerrit Rietveld, Cornelis van Eesteren en Georges Vantongerloo - en van tijdgenoten zoals El Lissitzky, Kurt Schwitters, Hans Richter, Hans Arp, César Domela, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, Jean Hélion en Otto Gustaf Carlsund.
Centraal staan de interdisciplinariteit en de interactiviteit die leidden tot een nieuwe stijl die in overeenstemming was met een nieuwe leefwijze en waarin kunst, architectuur, film, poëzie, literatuur, design, typografie enzovoort hand in hand gingen. Centraal staat met andere woorden de creatieve dynamiek van de avant-garde die vanuit de principes van het neoplasticisme en via uiteenlopende esthetica's en politiek-culturele ideologieën de grondslagen legde van een hedendaagse kunst die universeel was in plaats van individueel.
Meer dan honderd schilderijen, tekeningen, foto's, tijdschriften, publicaties, meubels, maquettes en reproducties van bouwplannen maken dit alles concreet. De meeste van deze werken komen uit musea in Nederland. Nooit eerder werd in België een overzichtstentoonstelling en begeleidende publicatie gewijd aan Theo van Doesburg en de Nederlandse avant-garde. Niet te missen dus!

Cet ouvrage kaléidoscopique présente Théo van Doesburg tel un propagandiste nomade, en permanente recherche d'une esthétique nouvelle qui, en interaction avec la science et la technologie contemporaines, se propose de réformer le monde.
Ce catalogue d'exposition débute avec la présentation de l'art et des idées du mouvement hollandais De Stijl, la revue et le courant artistique éponyme étant fondés en 1917 à Leyde. Se déploient ensuite les différentes facettes de l'oeuvre de l'artiste : les expressions néo-plastiques et dadaïstes, réalisées sous le pseudonyme I. K. Bonset; puis, en rupture avec Mondrian, l'Élémentarisme (1924-1926) et finalement l'Art concret, un collectif groupé autour de l'art géométrique abstrait, fondé par l'artiste en 1930 .
L'accent est également mis sur les collaborations entre Van Doesburg et d'autres artistes éminents de l'avant-garde, en montrant des oeuvres des premiers membres du mouvement De Stijl : Piet Mondrian, Bart van der Leck, Vilmos Huszár, Jacobus Johannes Oud, Gerrit Rietveld, Cornelis van Eesteren, Georges Vantongerloo et de certains contemporains tels El Lissitzky, Kurt Schwitters, Hans Richter, Hans Arp, César Domela, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, Jean Hélion, Otto Gustaf Carlsund etc…
Cette publication se focalise sur l'importance accordée à l'interdisciplinarité et au processus interactif qui contribuera au développement d'un style nouveau, en accord avec une nouvelle façon de vivre, qui réunisse en même temps l'art et l'architecture, le cinéma, la poésie, la littérature, le design, la typographie, etc. La dynamique créative de l'avant-garde occupe donc la place d'honneur. Une dynamique qui, à travers différentes esthétiques et idéologies politico-culturelles et à partir des principes fondamentaux du Néo-Plasticisme, jettera les bases d'un certain art contemporain, non plus individuel mais universel.
Le livre se composera de plus de cent tableaux, dessins, photographies, revues, publications, meubles, maquettes et reproductions de plans d'architecture. La plupart de ces oeuvres proviennent de musées hollandais. Une occasion unique, car l'oeuvre de Theo van Doesburg et de l'avant-garde néerlandaise n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'une grande monographie en Belgique.

This kaleidoscopic exhibition catalogue presents Theo van Doesburg as a nomadic propagandist on an ongoing quest for a new aesthetic which, in interaction with contemporary science and technology, seeks to reform the world. The publication opens with a presentation of the art and ideas of the Dutch movement De Stijl, the review and art movement of the same name having been founded in 1917 in Leiden. The show then explores the various facets of the artist's work: the Neo-Plasticist and Dadaist creations produced under the pseudonym I.K. Bonset; then, breaking with Mondrian, Elementarism (1924-6) and lastly Concrete art, a collective centred around abstract geometric art, founded by the artist in 1930. Attention is also given to the collaborations between van Doesburg and other eminent artists of the avant-garde, with works by leading members of the movement De Stijl on show such as Piet Mondrian, Bart van der Leck, Vilmos Huszár, Jacobus Johannes Oud, Gerrit Rietveld, Cornelis van Eesteren, Georges Vantongerloo, and by some contemporaries such as El Lissitzky, Kurt Schwitters, Hans Richter, Hans Arp, César Domela, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart, Jean Hélion, Otto Gustaf Carlsund, etc.
This exhibition and accompanying catalogue highlights the importance of the interdisciplinarity and interaction that contributed to the development of a new style, in agreement with a new way of living, which simultaneously brings together art and architecture, cinema, poetry, literature, design, typography, etc. The creative dynamic of the avant-garde therefore takes centre stage. A dynamic which, through different aesthetic principles and politico-cultural ideologies and based on the fundamental principles of Neo-Plasticism, would lay the foundations for a distinct contemporary art, no longer individual but universal. The exhibition will consist of over 100 paintings, drawings, photographs, reviews, publications, pieces of furniture, models and reproductions of architectural plans. Most of these works come from museums in the Netherlands. A unique opportunity because the work of Theo van Doesburg and the Dutch avant-garde has never before been the object of a major monograph in Belgium.
