Rebel Rebel

Sinds de jaren 1960 maakt de rockmuziek, samen met andere popculturen zoals sciencefiction, deel uit van de nieuwe inspiratiebronnen die plastisch kunstenaars graag in hun werken verwerken. De rockmuziek is afgeleid van de blues en de countrymuziek, de muziek van het Amerikaanse platteland. Ze ontwikkelde zich in de late jaren 1950 als een specifieke jongerencultuur waarvan de geschiedenis slingert tussen industrieel entertainment en verzet tegen het establishment. Sinds de opkomst van de popart bepaalt de "religie" van de rockmuziek - nu eens in nostalgische bewondering, dan weer in vlijmscherpe parodieën - met haar elektriserende vervormingen en diabolische refreinen een groot deel van de hedendaagse kunst. In samenspel met de kunst verbreedde de popmuziek het spectrum van een gevoeligheid die ze van dan af gemeen hadden: van politieke opstand tot identiteitscrisis over artistiek nihilisme.

Dit werk verschijnt naar aanleiding van de belangrijke tentoonstelling Rebel Rebel (Art + Rock) in het MAC's (Le Grand-Hornu) in 2016. Het voert de lezer mee op een reis door de hedendaagse kunst via de rockmuziek en haar drie belangrijkste facetten. Het eerste facet, gekleurd door de songs van Hank Williams of Patti Smith, belicht kunstenaars zoals Dan Graham, Allen Ruppersberg of David Askevold die zich tot de volkse roots van de rockmuziek aangetrokken voelen. Het tweede facet, iconisch naar het voorbeeld van Elvis Presley, Deborah Harry of Kurt Cobain, spitst zich toe op werken die de ijdelheden van de sterrenwereld en haar glamouresthetiek op de korrel nemen, in de trant van Mimmo Rotella, Douglas Gordon of General Idea. Het derde en laatste facet is gehuld in de zwartheid van punkgroepen als de Ramones of de Stooges en stelt beeldenstormende beeldende kunstenaars voor die, zoals Art & Language, Steven Parrino of Jonathan Monk, de modernistische mythe van de auteur als genie doorprikken. Aan elk van deze facetten is een hoofdstuk gewijd in dit boek dat, vertrekkend vanuit "artrock duo's" (Andy Warhol + Bob Dylan, Tony Oursler + Sonic Youth, Jeremy Deller + New Order,…), rond diverse afbeeldingenreeksen is georganiseerd. Deze drie delen, die respectievelijk Roots, Looks en Fools heten, worden aangevuld met bio's, een chronologie en een glossarium. Ze zijn de kern van een project waarin rockmuziek en hedendaagse kunst een eigenzinnig en oproerig duo vormen.

Depuis les années 60, le rock fait partie, avec d'autres cultures populaires comme la Science-fiction, des nouvelles sources d'inspiration et de réflexions que détournent les artistes plasticiens. Dérivé du blues et de la country, musiques rurales américaines, le rock qui apparaît à la fin des fifties se profile comme une culture typiquement adolescente dont l'histoire oscille entre divertissement industriel et révolte suburbaine. Célébrée avec nostalgie ou parodiée avec virulence, sa « religion » hante, depuis le Pop Art, tout un pan de l'art contemporain de ses distorsions électriques et refrains diaboliques. Associé à l'art, il élargi le spectre d'une sensibilité désormais partagée : de la révolte politique à la crise identitaire en passant par le nihilisme artistique.

Publié à l'occasion de l'importante exposition Rebel Rebel (Art + Rock) programmée par le MAC's au Grand-Hornu, en 2016, cet ouvrage propose une traversée de l'art contemporain à travers le prisme du rock et de ses trois principales facettes.
Colorée notamment par les chansons de Hank Williams ou Patti Smith, la première met en lumière des artistes qui, comme Dan Graham, Allen Ruppersberg ou David Askevold, se sont interessés aux racines vernaculaires de la musique rock.
La seconde, iconique à l'image d'Elvis Presley, Deborah Harry ou Kurt Cobain, sélectionne des oeuvres qui s'en prennent aux vanités du star system et de son esthétique glamour, à la manière de Mimmo Rotella, Douglas Gordon ou General Idea.
Enfin, teintée par la noirceur de groupes punk comme les Ramones ou les Stooges, la troisième facette du rock présente des plasticiens iconoclastes qui déconstruisent, comme Art & Langage, Steven Parrino ou Jonathan Monk, le mythe moderniste de l'auteur génial.

A chacune de ces facettes correspond un chapitre du livre qui, partant de duos 'art-rock' (Andy Warhol + Bob Dylan, Tony Oursler + Sonic Youth, Jeremy Deller + New Order,… ), s'organise en divers planches iconographiques. Augmentées de biographies, d'une chronologie et d'un glossaire, ces trois parties respectivement intitulées Roots, Looks et Fools constituent le coeur d'un projet éditorial où musique rock et art contemporain s'associent en un combo bâtard et rebelle.

Derived from blues and country music, two rural genres in America, rock music, which emerged in the late 1950s, presents itself as a typically adolescent culture of which the history oscillates between industrial entertainment and suburban revolt. Celebrated with nostalgia or parodied with virulence, its 'religion' has haunted, since pop art, an entire section of contemporary art with its electric distortions and diabolical refrains. Associated with art, it has broadened the spectrum of a sensitivity that is now shared: from political rebellion to identity crisis via artistic nihilism.

Published on the occasion of Rebel Rebel (Art + Rock), a major exhibition programmed by the MAC's at Grand-Hornu in 2016, this work proposes a journey across contemporary art through the prism of rock and its three principal facets. Lastly, shaded by the darkness of punk groups like The Stooges and Ramones, the third facet of rock presents iconoclastic artists who, like Art & Language, Steven Parrino and Jonathan Monk, deconstruct the modernist myth of the author of genius. Each of these facets corresponds to a chapter in the book which, starting out from 'art-rock' duos (Andy Warhol + Bob Dylan, Tony Oursler + Sonic Youth, Jeremy Deller + New Order, etc.), is organized according to various iconographic plates. Enriched with biographies, a chronology and a glossary, these three parts, respectively entitled 'Roots', 'Looks' and 'Fools', form the core of a publishing project in which rock music and contemporary art come together in a hybrid, rebellious combo.
