(Re)Making Collections - La Fabrique des collections

Terwijl 'herkomstonderzoek' naar Europa's niet-westerse erfgoed een must is geworden in museaal onderzoek (en cultuurbeleid), zijn de collecties van het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika in Tervuren (België) nooit in hun geheel kritisch onderzocht in een wetenschappelijk werk.
Hoewel de geschiedenis van de instelling en van sommige van haar wetenschappelijke afdelingen en/of collecties natuurlijk al onderzocht zijn - soms in diepgaande studies - biedt dit boek nieuwe interpretatiekaders in het licht van actuele debatten. Opgebouwd rond twee centrale thema's - het erfgoedhoofdstuk in de historische en hedendaagse Belgisch-Congolese context en het meer specifieke geval van de collecties (overigens niet uitsluitend cultureel of uit Centraal-Afrika) van het Museum van Tervuren - biedt het een breed overzicht in een compilatie van teksten: recent en onuitgegeven onderzoek, maar ook geactualiseerde samenvattingen van eerder werk, interviews en artistieke interventies.
Het boek verkent ook nieuwe trends in herkomstonderzoek van koloniale collecties en evalueert de mogelijkheden en beperkingen van dergelijk onderzoek, evenals de implicaties ervan voor ons begrip van de koloniale geschiedenis in haar geheel en de uitdagingen waarmee musea vandaag worden geconfronteerd.

De redacteurs
Sarah Van Beurden behaalde haar doctoraat in de geschiedenis aan de University of Pennsylvania en is associate professor geschiedenis, Afro-Amerikaanse studies en Afrikanistiek aan de Ohio State University.
Didier Gondola volgde de opleiding sociale geschiedenis aan de Université Paris-7. Hij is professor Afrikaanse Geschiedenis en Africana Studies aan de John Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Agnès Lacaille is kunsthistorica en museologe (MA), gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van museale collecties. Ze is onderzoeker in de dienst Erfgoedstudies in het KMMA

Alors que la « recherche de provenance » concernant les patrimoines extra-occidentaux en Europe est devenue incontournable dans le champ de la recherche muséale (et dans celui des politiques culturelles), les collections du Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale à Tervuren (Belgique) n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'un examen critique dans leur globalité au sein d'un ouvrage scientifique qui leur soit consacré.
Si l'histoire de l'institution, de certaines de ses sections scientifiques et/ou collections a bien sûr déjà fait l'objet d'études parfois poussées, ce livre fournit de nouvelles grilles de lecture à l'aune des débats actuels. Construit autour de deux axes - le champ patrimonial dans les contextes belgo-congolais historiques et contemporains ainsi que le cas plus précis des collections (pas uniquement culturelles ni provenant de l'Afrique centrale d'ailleurs) du Musée de Tervuren -, il propose un vaste survol dans une compilation de textes : recherches récentes et inédites mais aussi synthèses actualisées de travaux antérieurs, entretiens et interventions artistiques.
En outre, l'ouvrage explore de nouveaux courants de la recherche de provenance sur les collections coloniales et évalue tant les possibilités et limites de celle-ci que ses implications pour notre compréhension de l'histoire coloniale dans sa totalité et les enjeux pour les musées aujourd'hui.

Origins, Trajectories & Reconnections

Provenance research for non-Western heritage in Europe is now a must in the field of museum studies and cultural policy studies, yet no scholarly work has scrutinized the collections of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren (Belgium) as a whole.
While the institution's history and some of its scientific sections or collections have already been investigated, at times in great depth, this book provides new frameworks for interpretation in the light of current debates. Structured around two lines - the heritage field in historical and contemporary Belgo-Congolese contexts, and the more specific case of the Tervuren museum's collections (which, moreover, are neither solely cultural nor Central African) -, this collection of texts gives a broad overview in the form of recent and previously unpublished research, updated summaries of prior investigations, interviews, and artistic contributions.
The book also explores new trends in provenance research for colonial collections and evaluates both the possibilities and the limitations of such research, its implications for our understanding of colonial history as a whole, and the challenges facing museums today.

The editors
Sarah Van Beurden earned her Ph.D. in history from the University of Pennsylvania. She is an associate professor of History and African American and African studies at Ohio State University.
Didier Gondola was trained as a social historian at the Université Paris-7. He is a professor of African History and Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Agnès Lacaille is an art historian and museologist (MA) specializing in the history of museum collections. She is a researcher with the Heritage Studies service of the RMCA.
