memymom

Memymom is the name used by the artists'' collective and mother-and-daughter team Marilène Coolens (1953) and Lisa De Boeck (1985) since 2004. The seeds of the project were planted in the 1990s, when the photographer Marilène Coolens was taking snapshots of her growing daughter and had her play out scenes from cartoons, fairy tales and TV shows, in the hope of stimulating little Lisa''s imagination. The result was an intimate family archive of analogue photographs, which memymom later collected under the title ''The Umbilical Vein''. As the daughter grew up, however, the roles began to shift: Lisa became photographer and model, set dresser and director all at once. And Marilène too extended her role and began to appear in the images herself. In the process, they evolved into an artist duo, with the two women now on an equal footing. Memymom''s photographs are sensitive images with strong references to theatre and film. Past and present blend in pictures that continue to refer to childhood, but in which youthful innocence has given way to sensuality. This autumn, memymom will feature in a solo exhibition at the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi, which will show both old photographs (from the family archive) and more recent work (22 September 2018-20 January 2019).

Memymom - contraction de “me and my mom” - est le nom derrière lequel se dissimule, depuis 2004, le collectif artistique doublé d''une équipe mère-fille Marilène Coolens (°1953) et Lisa De Boeck (°1985). Ce projet a pris naissance dans les années 1990, quand la photographe Marilène Coolens a commencé à photographier sa fille grandissante et à lui faire interpréter des scènes de contes, de dessins animés ou de séries télévisées, dans l''espoir de stimuler l''imagination de la petite Lisa. Les archives familiales de photos analogiques intimes ainsi obtenues ont été réunies ultérieurement par memymom sous le titre ''The Umbilical Vein''. Mais, lorsque la fille atteint l''âge adulte, les rôles changent: Lisa devient à la fois photographe et modèle, ensemblière et réalisatrice. Et sa mère Marilène sort de son rôle pour apparaître elle-même à l''image. Les deux femmes évoluent ainsi en un duo d''artistes, où elles occupent des positions équivalentes. Très sensibles, les photos de memymom véhiculent des références flagrantes au théâtre et au cinéma. Le passé et le présent se mélangent dans ces images, qui rappellent encore l''enfance, mais où la sensualité éclipse l''innocence juvénile. Cet automne, l''exposition solo de memymom au Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi combinera photos anciennes (empruntées aux archives familiales) et oeuvres récentes (22 septembre 2018 - 20 janvier 2019).
