Europa Oxalà

The Europa Oxalà exhibition presents the works of twenty-one European artists and intellectuals whose family origins lie in the former colonies. These “children of empires”, born and raised in a postcolonial context, offer a reflection on their heritage, their memory and their identity. Their parents and grandparents were born and lived in Congo, Angola, Guinea, Benin, Algeria, Madagascar; and these artists inherited not only voices, sounds and gestures, but also images and memories of their cultures of origin, the starting point of an important work of research in the historical archives. As a result, their artistic productions nourish an original reflection on racism, the decolonization of the arts, or the deconstruction of colonial thought. The way in which some of them combine contemporary languages ??and traditional processes is an essential contribution for contemporary Europe. The innovative and transnational character of the work of these “post-memory” artists has also deeply marked the artistic and cultural scene over the past two decades. Europa Oxalà presents around sixty works (paintings, drawings, sculptures, films, photos, installations) by twenty-one artists: Aimé Mpane, Aimé Ntakiyica, Carlos Bunga, Délio Jasse, Djamel Kokene-Dorléans, Fayçal Baghriche, Francisco Vidal, John K Cobra, Katia Kameli, Mohamed Bourouissa, Josèfa Ntjam, Malala Andrialavidrazana, Márcio de Carvalho, Mónica de Miranda, Nú Barreto, Pauliana Valente Pimentel, Pedro AH Paixão, Sabrina Belouaar, Sammy Baloji, Sandra Mujinga, Sara Sadik.
Through their work, Europa Oxalà bears witness to the creative power of contemporary European cultural diversity, opening up new perspectives to the notion of Europe.

L'exposition Europa Oxalà présente les travaux de vingt et un artistes et intellectuels européens dont les origines familiales se situent dans les anciennes colonies. Ces « enfants d'empires », nés et élevés dans un contexte postcolonial, proposent une réflexion sur leur héritage, leur mémoire et leur identité. Leurs parents et grands-parents sont nés et ont vécu au Congo, en Angola, en Guinée, au Bénin, en Algérie, à Madagascar ; et ces artistes ont hérité non seulement des voix, des sons et des gestes, mais aussi des images et des souvenirs de leurs cultures d'origine, point de départ d'un important travail de recherche dans les archives historiques. De ce fait, leurs productions artistiques nourrissent une réflexion originale sur le racisme, la décolonisation des arts, ou encore la déconstruction de la pensée coloniale. La façon dont certains d'entre eux conjuguent langages contemporains et processus traditionnels constitue un apport essentiel pour l'Europe contemporaine. Le caractère novateur et transnational des travaux de ces artistes « post-mémoire » a d'ailleurs profondément marqué la scène artistique et culturelle ces deux dernières décennies. Europa Oxalà présente environ soixante œuvres (peintures, dessins, sculptures, films, photos, installations) de vingt et un artistes : Aimé Mpane, Aimé Ntakiyica, Carlos Bunga, Délio Jasse, Djamel Kokene-Dorléans, Fayçal Baghriche, Francisco Vidal, John K. À travers leurs travaux, Europa Oxalà témoigne de la puissance créatrice de la diversité culturelle européenne contemporaine, ouvrant de nouvelles perspectives à la notion d'Europe.


L'exposition Europa Oxalà sera tout débord présentée au Mucem à Marseille du 20 octobre 2021 au 16 janvier 2022, puis à la Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian (Lisbonne) du 3 mars au 30 mai 2022. Enfin, elle sera proposée au Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale à Tervuren du 6 octobre 2022 au 5 mars 2023.
