Het Brusselse moeder-dochter kunstenaarsduo Marilène Coolens en Lisa De Boeck startte in de jaren '90. Marilène fotografeerde toen jarenlang Lisa als kind in fantasierijke taferelen, die zij gretig mee verzon. Sinds 2004 staan beiden als memymom samen achter en voor de lens als fotograaf en acteur. Door de jaren heen werd het intieme en speelse karakter van de foto's geïnjecteerd met engagement en ging het trefzeker vormgeven van een strijdbare visie op de wegen van de wereld een steeds grotere rol spelen. De hoofdrol, zoals hun jongste reeks Somewhere Under the Rainbow onweerlegbaar aantoont.

In dit boek, beginnend bij en vertrekkend uit dit recente werk, toont het duo dankzij terugkerende verwijzingen en spiegelingen, hoe hun thema's en beeldtaal in dertig jaar consequent belangrijk bleven en tegelijk een boeiende esthetische en inhoudelijke evolutie doormaakten. Het laat ook zien hoe het toelaten van anderen in hun foto's al van in het begin deel uitmaakte van hun artistieke streven. (Eng/ Franse editie)

memymom est le fruit de la collaboration artistique mère-fille réunissant Marilène Coolens et Lisa De Boeck. Né dans les années 1990, leur projet transgénérationnel se compose d'archives intimes et de photos de famille dans lesquelles Marilène incite sa fille Lisa à s'exprimer et à s'inventer en improvisant ses propres scènes théâtrales. Depuis 2004, les protagonistes travaillent ensemble derrière et devant l'objectif, simultanément photographe et modèle. Au fil des ans, les portraits oniriques et partiellement mis en scène de memymom ont mûri en une conversation sur la métamorphose, l'identité personnelle, le potentiel, ainsi qu'en un plaidoyer pour l'analyse sensuelle et le romantisme tragique, comme l'illustre irréfutablement leur dernière série Somewhere Under the Rainbow.

Au travers de ce livre, qui représente l'aboutissement et le prolongement de leur travail récent, les deux artistes dévoilent la manière dont leurs thèmes et leur langage visuel ont conservé leur identité propre ces trente dernières années, tout en évoluant de manière fascinante en termes d'esthétique et de contenu, par le biais de références et de réflexions récurrentes. Cette exposition est aussi l'occasion de découvrir comment la participation d'un groupe hétéroclite d'autres individus jouant chacun un rôle différent fait partie intégrante de leur processus artistique depuis toujours.

memymom is the mother-daughter artistic collaboration of Marilène Coolens and Lisa De Boeck. Their transgenerational project, which first emerged in the 1990s, consists of intimate archives and family photos where Marilène urges her daughter Lisa to express and invent herself by improvising her own theatrical scenes. Since 2004, the protagonists have worked together behind and in front of the lens, simultaneously photographer and model. Over the years, memymom's dreamlike, partly directed portraits have matured into a conversation about metamorphosis, personal identity, potential, as well as a plea for sensual analysis and tragic romanticism, as irrefutably illustrated in their latest series Somewhere Under the Rainbow.

In this book, which is the culmination and prolongation of their recent work, the two artists disclose the way in which their themes and visual language have remained constant over the past thirty years, while simultaneously evolving fascinatingly in terms of aesthetics and content, through recurring references and reflections. This exhibition also provides an opportunity to see how the inclusion of an assorted group of other people, each playing a different role, has always been part of their artistic process.
